A 5-year vision for the restoration of Daniel Stanton Park will soon become a reality thanks to the support of Resurgens Orthopaedics? Charitable Foundation. Located in downtown Atlanta, just south of Turner Stadium, the 7.9-acre property will serve as an all abilities playground for area residents and the general public.

The initial construction and setup of the park will be performed by Game Time and will allow children with disabilities the opportunity to play along side their friends and siblings.

Back in the early 1930's to 1960's, a portion of the park?s property served as an electrical substation for Georgia Power and was later used by a landfill company for uncontrolled dumping of municipal wastes. In 1964, the City of Atlanta acquired the property and developed it as a public park.

The existing park was closed in January 1999 after a child received burns to her hands and arms while playing on a slide. To prevent future hazardous waste incidents from occurring, the City of Atlanta completely excavated the park site and clean fill material was brought in leaving the park barren due to the lack of funding resources needed to rebuild the park.

In August 2003, Resurgens Orthopaedics' Charitable Foundation expressed interest in financially supporting the restoration of D.L. Stanton Park after their first successful playground venture was completed at Hammond Park in May 2003. ?We raise money through our charitable foundation as a way to give back to the community,? stated Dr. Kay Kirkpatrick with Resurgens Orthopaedics. With a monetary contribution also made to the park by the Braves Foundation, the initial planning stages for the new D.L. Stanton Park were underway. The Peoplestown Revitalization Corp., a committee formed by the area residents and members of the community, has also taken an active role in the playground planning efforts and look forward to the day when their children can enjoy the amenities offered by the new D.L. Stanton Park.
